Hyundai Motor has introduced the Sonata New Rise, an upgrade of the seventh-generation Sonata, in Korea aiming to reclaim its throne as the nation's most popular mid-size sedan maker.

The country's top automaker said the facelift features enhanced engine performance with refined interior and exterior design as well as the latest safety systems while keeping within its reasonable price range.

“The Sonata New Rise has been altered to better accommodate various customers needs, offering a new set of standards in the nation's mid-size sedan market,” Hyundai Motor Executive Vice President Lee Kwang-guk said during the unveiling event at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, Wednesday.

“By introducing the facelift model, we seek to sell more than 92,000 Sonata sedans in Korea this year.”

The Sonata New Rise mounts four different engines _ a 2.0-liter Nu CVVT, a 1.6-liter Gamma T-GDi, a 2.0-liter Theta T-GDi and a 1.7-liter U-II e-VGT engine.

Of them, the turbo-powered 1.6-liter Gamma T-GDi and the 2.0-liter Theta T-GDi engines feature the signature performance exterior design. The 2.0-liter theta engine is coupled with the new Hyundai eight-speed automatic transmission.

It is the first time a domestically produced mid-size sedan is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The front face has the new highly textured "cascading grille,” which is also on its sister models such as the 2017 Grandeur sedan and the i30 hatchback. It also mounts the LED bi-function headlamps that can cast both high and low beams in the same lamp.

The Sonata New Rise has an even more radical change in the rear as the layout was fully reshaped. The trunk lid panel, where the license plate was placed, now displays the Sonata logo. The plate is underneath the bumper.

Reflecting mounting public concern over air pollution, the facelift model came up with the new one-touch air purifying system for the first time in its class.

Various advanced driver assistance systems were also adopted. Along with the emergency brake system that will automatically stop the car when its smart sensors detect a possible collision with a car or a pedestrian, the lane keeping assistance and the advanced smart cruise control system are expected to help provide an optimal driving environment.

The Sonata New Rise's price starts at 22.55 million won ($19,687).
