Korea picked up a much-needed win, edging out Syria 1-0 in a match in Seoul on Tuesday in the Asian qualifier for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Defender Hong Jeong-ho scored the only goal of the game in the first four minutes, but despite a good start, Korea struggled until the end of the match, failing to show an impressive play in neither attack nor defense, after a humiliating defeat a week earlier in China.

However, Korea still managed to win, and is in second place in the group behind Iran.

Korea has 13 points from four wins, one draw, and two losses, and Iran has 17 points from five wins and two draws. If Korea manages to hold on to second place until the end, it will be able to qualify for the World Cup without going through a playoff.

Korea has three matches remaining -- a match against Qatar on June 13, Iran on Aug. 31 and Uzbekistan on Sept. 5.
