's action noir film 'Real' didn't live up to the hype and has been a major disappointment at the box office, attracting less than 500,000 admissions to date.
According to numbers from the Korean Film Committee on July 19, 'Real
' gained just 1,578 admissions on July 18 and the film has a total admissions number of 466,331.
The number of theaters playing 'Real' has dwindled. It is currently screening in a total of 58 locations as opposed to the 970 screenings on opening day. There is no doubt the movie has clearly flopped at the box office after nearly 4 weeks. In comparison, the movie 'Anarchist from Colony' which opened on the same day as 'Real' on June 28, has attracted an admissions number of more than 2.2 million viewers to date.
Despite a hefty production budget of 11.5 Billion KRW (~$11 million), 'Real' failed to reach the break-even point of 3 million admissions. Currently, it has grossed around $3 million at the box office, which isn't even 1/6 of the amount it was expected to earn. As a result, 'Real' has clearly been a disappointment, going down as one of the worst movies in 2017.
'Real' also received funding from China's Alibaba Pictures for the film and even had the big-star name of Kim Soo-hyun but it was unable to deliver a satisfying story to movie-goers.
Meanwhile, a potential release in China is still pending following the strict THAAD regulations.
