U.S. website HybridCars.com said Sunday that Hyundai and Kia sold a total of 4,976 units last month, up 9 percent from 4,566 in June and more than double last July's 2,069.

Kia's Niro hybrid SUV made the biggest contribution to the strong performance. The model sold 2,763 cars, accounting for 56 percent of the automakers' July sales. It was the third-best-selling hybrid car for the month after Toyota's Prius (6,034) and RAV4 (4,695).
Hyundai's Ioniq, which hit the U.S. market in March, ranked eighth with 1,209 cars sold.
