LG Electronics' new Whisen air conditioner.(LG)
on Wednesday unveiled a voice-controlled "smart" air conditioner that is capable of learning how its owner behaves.
The company claimed the Whisen Dual Special air conditioner is embedded with voice-activated AI, though the development of actual artificial intelligence is still a long way off.
The users can call the gadget by saying, "LG Whisen!" within a maximum range of 3 m, to turn the power on and off, adjust the temperature, direction and intensity of the fan, and enable other functions.
"Previous voice-controlled air conditioners were activated only when they were given clearly articulated voice commands. But the new air conditioner can understand even voice commands in context," the spokesman said.
For example, if the user says, "It's a little cold now," the machine asks, "Shall I raise the preferred temperature?"
Equipped with a "deep learning" function, the machine can learn user's speech patterns. The longer it is used, the better the voice recognition.
"We'll also apply these functions to other home appliances like washing machines and refrigerators," said Song Dae-hyun, the head of LG's home appliance division.
